The AWA Project at APEC’s Youth Forum: “Leaders in Action”

On November 13th, 2024, Mafer Chaparro, Consultant and Strategic Representative at The AWA Project, proudly participated in the Youth Forum “Leaders in Action: Global Challenges and Peru's Future”, held within the framework of APEC 2024. The event brought together 30 inspiring young changemakers, each committed to driving innovative solutions to Peru's most pressing challenges.

During the event, Mafer introduced The AWA Project, highlighting our mission to empower communities in making water-related decisions, with a particular focus on respecting and integrating diverse local perspectives. As a culturally sensitive initiative, AWA aims to create an international platform for youth to become water changemakers within their communities, helping shape sustainable water management solutions. Our platform serves as an idea hub, where youth-driven initiatives can thrive and grow.

In addition to showcasing AWA's ongoing work, Mafer shared AWA's key initiatives:

  • “Water Voices Around the World” Podcast: AWA’s podcast that brings together global perspectives on water access, sustainability, and innovation.

  • Ambassadors program: AWA seeks to offer a platform where youth leaders can receive mentorship and resources to kickstart water-related projects within their communities.

The forum also provided an opportunity to engage in discussions about leadership, the challenges facing young leaders, and the importance of horizontal networking—connecting with peers to share knowledge, resources, and opportunities, as opposed to solely relying on traditional top-down models. A key takeaway from the event was the importance of respecting local visions and aligning efforts to create articulated and meaningful change.

We are deeply grateful to AFS Peru and all event organizers for creating this platform, and to the fellow youth leaders whose initiatives continue to inspire us to work towards equitable and sustainable solutions.

The AWA Project remains committed to empowering communities, fostering collaborative action, and ensuring access to clean and safe water for all.
